Short answer

A recall notice tells the public that a product is unsafe and what to do with it. In the US, the CPSC lists recalls with the hazard, remedy and number of units 1. The UK's OPSS publishes recalls, product safety reports and product safety alerts 4. The EU's Safety Gate recorded 4,671 alerts in 2025, the highest level on record 3. In Australia, a supplier must tell the ACCC of a safety recall within 2 days 6.

What a recall notice does

A recall notice names a product, explains the hazard and tells owners what to do. The CPSC's recall entries each give a hazard description, the remedy, the number of units and a consumer contact 1. The remedy can be a refund, a repair or a replacement 1.

Not every safety action is a recall. The UK's Office for Product Safety and Standards uses three labels 4. A product recall asks owners to act to get a free replacement, repair or refund 4. A product safety report covers a corrective measure other than a recall 4. A product safety alert covers a product category with a risk of serious injury or death 4.

United States: three agencies, three lists

The Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes recalls and product safety warnings for consumer goods 1. It offers CSV downloads, email alerts and an RSS feed 1. Its separate SaferProducts.gov database lets the public file and read reports about unsafe products 2. Makers named in a report are told and may have their comments published with it 2.

The FDA sorts recalls into three classes 8. Class I means a reasonable probability of serious adverse health consequences 8. Class II covers temporary or medically reversible effects 8. Class III means the product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences 8. A recall may be done on the firm's own initiative, by FDA request or by FDA order 8. A market withdrawal is a different step, used for a minor violation that would not be subject to FDA legal action 8.

The FDA's public recall list is drawn from press releases and other public notices 9. The FDA says not all recalls have press releases or are posted on that page 9.

Vehicle, car seat, tyre and equipment recalls sit with NHTSA 10. Its VIN search shows unrepaired recalls and leaves out safety recalls more than 15 years old, except where a maker offers more coverage 10.

European Union and United Kingdom

Safety Gate is the EU system that lets authorities in the EU and the European Economic Area share information about dangerous non-food products and act quickly 3. The European Commission reported 4,671 alerts in 2025, up 13% and the highest level on record 3. Follow-up actions rose by 35% 3. Cosmetics and toys made up over half of the cases 3.

In the UK, OPSS and local trading standards authorities act as market surveillance authorities 4. The OPSS list can be searched, and readers can sign up for email updates 4.

Australia and Canada

The ACCC runs a searchable recall list with filters by topic and date 5. Under section 128 of the Australian Consumer Law, a supplier must tell the ACCC of a recall within 2 days 6. The ACCC receives that notice on behalf of the Commonwealth Minister 6.

Canada's recalls site, created by Health Canada, covers recalls and safety alerts for consumer products, vehicles, food and health products 7.
